[ ÖKO PRODUCT MATERIALS ]
[ PACKAGING ]
Almost all of our packaging is made from renewable resources, is 100% compostable, bio-degradable and petroleum free. Our containers look and feel exactly like plastic but are actually made completely from corn, our spoons from potatoes! Yes, we’ve tried it and don’t recommend eating them. Our napkins, hot sleeves and take-out bags are made from recycled paper.
What’s with the chopsticks? They’re a fun, environmentally friendly alternative to the ubiquitous plastic fork. Some find it easier to pick up objects more precisely. If you need a little more practice we have bio-degradable forks available.
We recycle whatever, whenever possible. Please help by putting used plastic and glass in the appropriate recycling receptacles.
[ CLEANING PRODUCTS ]
You eat here. We spend a lot of time here. So we use natural, non-toxic, biodegradable, chemical free cleaning products whenever possible. Our dishwashing soap and general cleaning solutions are completely natural and non-toxic, and because they are developed for commercial use are powerful and effective. (www.Biokleen.com)
[ TEE SHIRT ]
OKO tee shirts are made from 100% organic cotton and are 100% sweatshop free. Why organic cotton? Our skin is a permeable organ through which chemicals and toxins can be absorbed. The less contact our skin comes with these substances, the less absorbed into our skin and bloodstream. Not to mention, composted manures and cover crops replace synthetic fertilizers; innovative weeding strategies are used instead of herbicides; beneficial insects and trap crops control insect pests; and alternatives to toxic defoliants prepare plants for harvest. This all means fewer toxic chemicals polluting our environment and our bodies.
[ FOOD PRODUCTS ]
Shipping materials means using more fuel. We try to use local suppliers and locally grown, organic, seasonal fruit when possible. Our yogurt is homemade fresh by a Greek family here in New York who have been doing it for over – years. Our teas and coffee are fair-trade and 100% organic.
[ IT’S ALL ABOUT BALANCE ]
It’s pretty close to impossible to be completely eco-friendly all the time in every aspect of your life. We know we surely are not. And using one corn cup or recycling one bottle may not seem like a big deal but imagine the collective long-term impact if everyone did just one earth friendly act just once a day. Doing something is 100% better than doing nothing.
We invite you to be contagious!
